About Us

Young Grant with colleague W & G Mackay painters and decorators was started in April 1963 by brothers Walter and Grant Mackay. Both brothers started their apprenticeships at the age of 15, working for the large painting firm of Thomas Tulloch's, Church street, Inverness and attending night school at Inverness college. Once a fully qualified painter at just the age of 20, Grant persuaded his older brother who was 33 at the time that they should form their own painting and decorating business. They started by putting an advert on the front page in the local newspaper (The Inverness Courier) and slowly but surely built up a great reputation and client base over the coming years. In fact they still work for some of the customers which they first worked for in the 1960's.

Stuart in 1997 In May, 1994 Grant's son Stuart joined the company straight from school at the age of 17, where he served his apprenticeship and also attended the decorating course at Inverness college for 2 years, achieving his city and guilds qualification at the end of it. Both years Stuart was there he finished top of his class and won the class prize, achieving 8 A's and 2 B's in the 1st year and 10 straight A's in the 2nd year. In 1997 he was chosen by the college to represent Inverness in Glasgow at a nationwide decorating exibition.

In June 1995 on his 65th birthday Walter retired from the business and in May 1998 Stuart became a partner.
